The outer world seems to be far, far away as we have been in our home for more than 2 months. Well, long gone the days, where we used to travel, enjoy the outdoor activity and click marvelous photos.
At the moment, whole world is in the kind of lockdown situation, and we have tried almost everything to stay in track and be productive. We have tried taking self-portrait, portraits through cam and we have talk most of the ideas of indoor photoshoot. However, things are falling down and it’s quite hard to stay motivated all the time.
Trying to address overall situation and a little bit motivation factor to all the aspiring photographers, we have come up with 5 ways to shoot window photography amid the lockdown. But before we jump into our main topic, do you know?
We all know the importance of framing in the world of Photography right? Since, we all are in our home and we all have windows or doors in our homes, why not to use it as a natural frame huh? Reach out to your windows or doors and figure out what do you see normally? If you have a room at the top floor of the house, then you might get astonishing view of sunset or sunshine or some wonders of nature and landscape photography.
Likewise, you can see many things from your windows, for instance your neighbors, people on the streets, vehicles on the roads, or it could be simply a bird minding its own business. Just place the subject of your photographs inside the window’s natural frame, compose it and shoot.
It’s just a view from a window. But with all the golden hour, clouds and a trees, it does look beautiful.
If you can’t find any interesting subjects from your windows, then you can always try shooting water drops.
Interesting right? Likewise, you can be more dramatic and include some colors and lights, just to portray some moods in these kind of shots. For instance:
How many of you love silhouette? We all have tried shooting silhouette on some part of our lives right? Whether it’s sunset or some soothing twilight hours, silhouette photographs have the power to swing the mood of the viewers. And when it comes to the natural window, it helps to create some dramatic silhouette.
Just place your subject in front of the window and let the natural lights behind the window work. Focus more on the bright lights which will help you to make your subject underexposed will eventually let your subject underexpose creating a lit silhouette.
The window is a natural frame, if you use it well, you can create fantastically and mind-blowing window silhouette photographs like this.
Well, it’s all about trial and error. Just keep practicing and you will get the perfect shot.
Taking a picture through a window can be tricky and difficult at the same time. Though it offers a unique and exciting perspective that will make you go for the shot, the reflections and glare can be a good barrier for the perfect shot. The only solution to this problem is using a filter, especially a polarizing filter.
Just like your sunglasses, it cuts the extra light and is a great tool for taking pictures in bright sunlight or any reflective surface. If you don’t have the option of using a polarizing filter, then you can always switch to Aperture mode and lower your Aperture. This will create a shallower depth of field by blurring some of the glare areas.
It’s better if you can include people and their actions in the frame, but if nothing works for you then you can simply click the windows or doors photos.
While taking photographs, you have to be very careful with shadows. If you are taking a window as the main source of light then you might end up creating strong sidelight or partial shadows on your subjects face. This is where you need to avoid harsh shadows that hinders the photographs.
This type of photo portrays the mood of the person. Whereas, the subject most of the time faces the window in a dismal sort of way or wondering about life and the universe. If you want to create some drama in the image, then you can use artists or musicians with their instruments or kids who are a natural wanderer.
Reflection of shiny objects may create distractions in the photographs, but not every time. Sometimes, it is the essence of the photographs and creates great effects in the photographs.
This type of shot is also great for portraying people’s moods. Before you go for such shots, make sure to clean your window and lense. Likewise, experiment with lights and shadows, the result will be worth sharing.
